Division vs. Group: Know the Difference on the Fireground

What’s the difference between a Division and a Group in the Incident Command System?

It’s simple:

DIVISION = WHERE

Divisions are geographic areas of responsibility.

GROUP = WHAT

Groups are functional assignments that can operate wherever needed to accomplish the mission.

Examples:

🔥 Alpha Division = geographic area

🔥 Division 2 = second-floor operations

🔍 Search Group = search function

🪓 Ventilation Group = ventilation function

🚒 RIT Group = rapid intervention function

Understanding the difference helps fire officers build a clearer command structure, maintain span of control, and communicate more effectively as incidents grow.

Prepare for the position. Not just the test.
